From Detritus to Design: A Teacher and Student Collaboration in the Midst of COVID-19
Room 407 at Silver Creek High School is known locally, regionally, and nationally for its T.H.I.S. project. The project draws its inspiration and direction from works by Dr. Tom Romano, Melinda Putz, and Shawna Coppola. This project sees students conceptualizing and composing no fewer than forty pieces of unique writing across genre and form. The project is fully-aligned with expectations set forth by the College Board and a cooperating college offering students dual credit in first-year composition. Hankins and his students found themselves mid-stream of the year-long multigenre/multiform inquiry project when the decision was made to go to distance learning after spring break.

An idea presented itself to invite students who might have needed more consultation to complete a project, invitations were sent to join a collaborative project that would be drafted and designed in real-time using technology and platforms not fully-appreciated or utilized prior to moving to distance learning. The end-product of this quick turnaround work is “From Detritus to Design: A Collaborative Project in the Midst of COVID-19.” Attendees will take away a blueprint for the project along with resource lists and engage in a quick look at multiform writing in the room.

The Role of Empathy in the Classroom: Reflecting, Questioning, and Repositioning
The education model for the twenty-first century requires students to be globally-conscious and equip themselves with cognitive, behavioral, and relational skills to problem solve from multiple perspectives and collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds. One such skill educators seek to help students develop is empathy. Empathy is used to realize, question, and disrupt power relations in language and literacy and to help students understand and prepare for the increasingly-connected world in which they live.

In this presentation, I will share how I taught empathy in three settings: teaching refugees in Budapest, teaching migrant students in rural Indiana, and co-teaching humanities in a PBL classroom. I will reflect on the efficacy of empathy in each experience and uncover common threads using critical literacy and Whiteness studies frameworks. I will share how empathy is currently assessed and conceptualized among researchers and education stakeholders and discuss the implications of these practices.

This presentation will also invite participants to reflect on their own experiences fostering empathy in their classrooms; engage in critical discussions on recent empathy assessment practices among education stakeholders; and collaboratively discuss ways to become more intentional and reflexive while using empathy to foster equity.

Educational Partnerships as Student Advocacy: Supporting Struggling Students in Rural Communities
As educators in rural communities, watching students struggle with limited knowledge of or access to additional educational resources outside the classroom can be a helpless feeling. Often, teachers attempt to fill in the gaps but lack knowledge or resources on how to help students receive the services they need. In this session, two former co-teachers, now a principal and PhD student-researcher, share how their own experience served as a catalyst for long-term commitment to building educational partnerships for students. Jake and Amy share research on the importance of partnerships in rural communities and suggestions on how educators can become advocates for students both inside and outside the classroom.
In this session, participants are invited to identify and reflect on educational partnerships in their own communities, discuss shared experiences, and strategize ways to cultivate and maintain partnerships as a form of student advocacy.

I Remember: Using Creative & Memoir Writing in the Classroom
Traditionally, the writing students do in school is primarily academic. It's focused with a purpose of using research and commentating on other work(s). At the Indiana Writers Center, we challenge this by giving students the opportunity to creatively write memoirs about their own lives. In this session, I will share with you creative and memoir writing prompts. In addition, we will examine the strategies we use at the center with our students. The prompts we use range from various topics like I remember, let me tell you, or write for change and social justice. We will then write together to these prompts and have an open discussion on how this type of writing can be valuable in your classroom. The Essential Role of Feedback in Distance/Blended Teaching and Learning
There is a good chance that many districts in Indiana and beyond will spend some of the upcoming year engaging in blended/distance teaching and learning. This will offer many challenges, but one of the most significant is that during blended/distance learning most of the bridges connecting teachers and students--the small discussions at the beginning and end of class, the quick check-ins, the real-time data via body language and facial expressions--are cut off. This is a major issue for many educators because those quick interactions aren’t just pleasant moments; they are where many teachers gain crucial information about who the students are and how they learn, build relationships with and cultivate positive beliefs within students, and generally create community and humanize the classroom. 

Luckily, however, there is one bridge that will remain open, regardless of how school looks: The feedback teachers give to students. This session, drawn from Matt's experience as a full-time ELA teacher and his recent book Flash Feedback: Responding to Student Writing Better and Faster -- Without Burning Out, will unpack the role that feedback can play during this time, regardless of a class's structure. It will also provide practical feedback strategies that will help feedback in any teaching arrangement, distanced or just socially-distanced, do more when it comes to building connections and community, cultivating positive beliefs and identities in students, and of course, helping students to better learn the content of the class.

Confronting Bias with Children's Literature
You have diverse books in your library. It's time to get them off of the shelf and use them intentionally to drive courageous conversations and broaden our students' world views. Not only do diverse books open up new worlds for our students, but they are crucial in understanding one another's stories. Presenters will define "bias" and participants will explore it's relevance in the elementary classroom. Examples of how children's literature is used to create opportunities to open up conversations will be shared.

Most teachers believe reading is power, but do the books students read in our classroom have the power to raise students’ critical consciousness and better prepare them to participate in a culturally rich and diverse society? There are many iPad apps and children's books that help students learn to express themselves, consider various viewpoints and develop opinions. International Graphic Novels and Wordless Books: Diverse and Multimodal Literacy for Learners and Leaders
In our pre-recorded session we share and discuss international wordless books, graphic novels, and even wordless graphic novels. Ways these books promote literacy for readers of all ages are suggested, along with specific strategies. International books naturally promote learning about cultures and diversity from non-U.S.-centric points of view, as they originated in countries other than the United States-- written in English or translated to English prior to U.S. publication or distribution. We will demystify stereotypes related to graphic novels and wordless books and reference support from scholars such as Carol Tilley, Frank Serafini, and others. Valuing multimodal reading and visual information is included. A handout with additional information, resources, numerous links, bibliographies, and our contact information accompanies this session on in ISLA conference site along with this recorded presentation. We carefully selected example books that appeal to readers in grades K-12, and we believe you will enjoy them also.

Literacy Leaders as Learners: Technology Integration in Literacy Instruction and Assessment
It is important to incorporate technology in literacy instruction (Leu, Kinzer, Coiro, & Cammack, 2004), yet planning for how to integrate it can be overwhelming for classroom teachers (Thoma, Hutchison, Johnson, Johnson, & Stromer, 2017). The purpose of this interactive session is to showcase ways to incorporate a variety of technology tools in literacy instruction that educators can take back to their classrooms and use immediately. Session leaders will introduce and model specific websites and apps, and describe ways to incorporate it in classroom literacy instruction. As a BYOD (bring your own device) session, participants will have hands-on experiences with the featured technology tools. Participants will rotate through engagement, teacher toolbox, and assessment stations led by teacher candidates who have used the resources as both students and teachers. Time will be allotted at the end of the session for participant questions, and session leaders will make connections to 21st Century skills and the Indiana Department of Education computer science standards.

Quality and Quantity of Literacy Instruction for ELLs in Indiana Elementary School
This research adopts a multiple-case study to explore the quality and quantity of the English language arts (ELA) instruction for English Language Learners (ELLs) across six 1st grade teachers (3 treatment teachers receiving ELL licensure coursework and instructional coaching and 3 control teachers receiving no coursework or coaching) from three Indiana school districts. Three video recordings were made of each teacher’s English language arts block at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. We developed and used rubrics grounded in the scientific literature of best practices for ELLs to evaluate the quality of literacy instruction. Rubrics were completed and reconciled by two research team members immediately following each observation. To measure quantity, we used the video analysis software V-note to code different types of literacy instructional strategies, techniques, and grouping configurations that are aligned with our rubrics. For example, use of small groups or instructional scaffolds to create greater comprehension among ELLs. Rubric scores and coded videos instances were reviewed and analyzed to answer the following research questions: What are the differences between the treatment and control groups of teachers in terms of (1) quality of instruction; (2) the amount of time allocated to various literacy components (e.g., phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary and writing) and to effective strategies; and (3) the amount of time spent in various grouping configurations (e.g., whole group, small group, pairs, individual work)? Through this inquiry, we draw conclusions about the quality and quantity of ELA instruction in light of what the academic literature indicates is high quality instruction for ELLs. This study holds important implications for literacy educators as they identify and employ what strategies are best suited for ELLs.

Sheltered Instruction for Young ELLs: A Study of Indiana Language Arts Classrooms
With the rapid growth of ELL population in Indiana, elementary school teachers in Indiana have increasing chances of instructing ELLs in their classroom. To ensure the academic achievement of ELLs, teachers can use sheltered instruction to make their content instruction more comprehensible for ELLs. This session shares the findings of federally funded projects designed to improve sheltered language arts instruction in Indiana through ELL teacher tlicensure coursework and coaching. Participants include 25 K-2 teachers in 5 schools districts across Indiana. Classroom observations were conducted during each teacher’s language arts lessons three times: in the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. Using the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), we scored the recorded lessons and analyzed the scores. Comparisons were made between the treatment teachers who received ELL teacher licensure coursework and/or coaching and the comparison teachers who did not. The findings will show: (1) the impact of ELL licensure coursework and coaching on the quality of sheltered language arts instruction; (2) the strengths and weaknesses of the participants’ instruction. The session will conclude with pedagogical implications and recommendations for more effective sheltered language arts instruction for young ELLs

What High Performing High Poverty Schools In Indiana Do Differently
During the 2019-2020 school year, a research study to analyze commonalities and differences between high and low performing high poverty public elementary schools in Indiana revealed some critical differences between high and low performing schools in correlates that are common among effective schools.

The session begins with a brief discussion of the statistically significant correlates and indicators identified in the Indiana research study. Participants will try to predict the significant correlates in the survey. The session concludes with an explanation of vital research-based practices that educators can quickly implement for more effective instructional outcomes.

Participants will identify actions they plan to apply in their classrooms and share with their teaching colleagues to improve academic outcomes for all students in their building. Additionally, participants will discover how children's literature, social-emotional learning, and trauma-informed teaching practices can help close some of the achievement gaps in high poverty schools.

The work of the Association of Effective Schools, Richard DuFour, Michael Fullan, John Hattie, Larry Lezotte, and Robert Marzano connects to the research study completed in Indiana and the practices that are the focus of this session.
