Making Room for Whole-Class Novels

Feedback form is now closed.
In today’s education world, using whole-class novels is a controversial subject. You will find teachers who wholeheartedly support using novels in the classroom and creating a shared reading experience. You will also find teachers who believe that whole-class novels cannot meet the needs of all students and instead, support independent choice reading. Why can’t we have both? In this session, teachers will learn ways to make whole-class novels work along with independent reading and student choice. Using ideas and strategies from the book, A Novel Approach, by Kate Roberts, participants will learn to create units that identify needed skills, to map out a unit, and to engage students while meeting their individual needs.
