Traditionally, the writing students do in school is primarily academic. It's focused with a purpose of using research and commentating on other work(s). At the Indiana Writers Center, we challenge this by giving students the opportunity to creatively write memoirs about their own lives. In this session, I will share with you creative and memoir writing prompts. In addition, we will examine the strategies we use at the center with our students. The prompts we use range from various topics like I remember, let me tell you, or write for change and social justice. We will then write together to these prompts and have an open discussion on how this type of writing can be valuable in your classroom. These shared experiences promote realtionship building and social emotional learning opportunities.
